How to store emergency water safely

Calculate your supply, choose suitable containers and maintain a simple rotation routine.

01

Calculate for your household

Start with the quantity recommended by your local authority, then add needs for food preparation, medication, infants and pets. Several smaller containers are safer to lift than one large container.

02

Choose suitable containers

Commercial sealed water is simplest. For refilling, use food-grade containers intended for water; never reuse vessels that held chemicals, fuel or cleaning products.

  • Wash hands and follow the container maker's cleaning instructions.
  • Close tightly and label the filling date.
  • Do not touch the inside of the cap or opening.
03

Store and rotate

Keep water away from sunlight, heat, flooding and toxic products. Inspect for leaks, damage, odour or cloudiness and rotate according to official and manufacturer advice.
