Prepare before temperatures peak
Monitor local weather and public health alerts. Identify the coolest room, check shades and ventilation, and arrange regular contact with older adults and others at higher risk.
- Keep water easy to reach and drink regularly.
- Schedule errands and exercise for cooler hours.
- Locate a public cooling centre if your home cannot stay cool.
Reduce heat exposure
Block direct sun, ventilate when outdoor temperatures fall, wear light clothing and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. Never leave a person or animal in a parked vehicle.
Recognise an emergency
Headache, weakness, dizziness or cramps can signal heat illness. Move the person to a cooler place and seek medical advice. Confusion, seizures, fainting or rapid deterioration require emergency services.
