Prioritise needs, not gadgets
Start with anything whose absence becomes dangerous quickly: safe water, prescribed medication, accessible communication, food and temperature protection.
Build modules
Use labelled containers for water and food, health, light and power, documents, hygiene and repairs. This makes the kit easier to inspect and share.
- Keep a flashlight and footwear beside each sleeping area.
- Store copies of contacts and the family plan on paper.
- Add infant, disability and pet supplies where needed.
Choose a safe location
Keep supplies dry, above likely flood level and reachable without entering a garage or hazardous area. Household members should know the location.
Maintain it
Review dates, batteries, seasonal clothing and personal details every six months and after every use. Replace consumed items immediately.
