Why radio still matters

Mobile networks and internet access may become congested or lose power. A radio receives one-way official broadcasts without needing an account or mobile data.

Features that matter

Prioritise clear reception, simple controls and a power source you can maintain.

• Reception for the public stations used in your area.
• Replaceable batteries plus a hand-crank or solar backup if useful.
• Headphone output and a readable tuning display.
• An integrated flashlight is useful but should not replace a separate light.

Prepare channels in advance

Test reception where the kit is stored and note local stations on paper. During an incident, verify the place and time of each announcement and avoid spreading undated recordings.

Maintain it

Test every six months, keep batteries out if the manufacturer recommends it and protect the radio from moisture. Store compatible spare batteries nearby.
