Core first aid supplies
Use the kit for minor injuries and immediate support while professional help is arranged. Store it in a durable, clearly marked container that adults can reach quickly.
- Sterile gauze, dressings, medical tape and assorted bandages.
- Disposable gloves, saline and a mild antiseptic safe for skin.
- Blunt-tip scissors, tweezers, thermometer and an emergency blanket.
- A CPR breathing barrier and instant cold pack.
Protect, alert and assist
Before opening the kit, make sure the scene is safe. Protect yourself and the injured person from traffic, fire, electricity, smoke or other hazards, call emergency services when the situation is serious, and provide only the help you know how to give while following dispatcher instructions.
- Give the exact location, number of people affected and hazards still present.
- Do not move someone with a serious injury unless remaining in place is more dangerous.
- Do not give food, drink or medicine to an unconscious or seriously injured person.
Medication and medical information
Keep medicines in labelled original packaging and follow medical advice and storage requirements. Include a paper list of allergies, diagnoses, doses and emergency contacts.
Maintain skills as well as supplies
Check expiry dates and damaged packaging every six months, replace used items immediately and take a recognised first aid and CPR course. Call emergency services for severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness or other life-threatening symptoms.
