What to do in an earthquake: before, during and after

Reduce hazards beforehand

Secure tall furniture, heavy objects and water heaters. Identify safe cover, keep shoes and a flashlight by the bed and know how to shut off gas, water and electricity if officials or damage require it.

During shaking: drop, cover and hold on

Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck under sturdy furniture if nearby, and hold on. Stay indoors away from glass unless the building becomes immediately unsafe.

• Do not use elevators.
• Outdoors, move away from façades, cables and trees.
• While driving, stop clear of bridges and overhead hazards.

After the shaking

Expect aftershocks. Check injuries and hazards without using flames or switches if gas may be leaking. Leave damaged buildings by stairs and do not re-enter until cleared.
